One of the last plays written by Shakespeare, Cymbeline is a genre-defying work mixing tragic, comic and historical elements. At the centre of the play is Shakespeare’s greatest young heroine, Imogen, daughter of the British king Cymbeline, who defies her father to marry her childhood playmate. This act sets off a chain of events including an accusation of infidelity, attempted murders, journeys into exile, the assumption of false identities and, finally, a war thwarted almost as soon as it is begun.

In the end, Imogen becomes a model of loving tolerance and forgiveness to all the male characters in the play who were so eager for the clamour of war. Cymbeline shows us how peace and love can triumph in the most fractured and disordered world.
