“When you stand in front of me and look at me,
what do you know of the griefs that are in me
and what do I know of yours.”

- Franz Kafka

The turbulence of our secret inner lives and the yearning to connect with others take centre stage in whisper, a new work conceived by Catalyst Theatre’s Jonathan Christenson and Bretta Gerecke, together with long-time collaborator Laura Krewski. Created with the BFA Acting Class of 2012 and the Department of Drama’s production staff, whisper reveals the powerful stories we carry within us that fundamentally define who we are, yet remain silent and invisible to the outside world. It explores the perpetual cycle of concealing and revealing, that dynamic tension between what appears to be and what is—the desire to be seen, to be heard, to be known for who we are always at odds with the fear of being exposed, of being cast out, of being destroyed.

whisper is an eloquent visual, aural and kinetic journey that will take you from laughter to pain, fear to elation, horror to euphoria, as 11 young artists dare to engage in the struggle to be true—in the moment, on stage, before an audience—to test the limits of authenticity within the artifice of theatre.

U of A Studio Theatre is thrilled to have two U of A Drama alumni return to their alma mater with an exciting new project. Jonathan Christenson (MFA Directing '96), our 2012 Mary Mooney Distinguished Visiting Artist, and Bretta Gerecke (MFA Theatre Design '96)—the creative team behind Catalyst Theatre's celebrated productions of Frankenstein, Nevermore and Hunchback—will bring their distinctive vision and process to the creation of a new work. Rounding out the team is their frequent collaborator, award-winning choreographer Laura Krewski and the U of A's own Matthew Skopyk on sound design.

Be among the first to see the potent, visceral and poetic new creation from this daring theatrical team that's turning heads across Canada, in London and New York!

Visit Catalyst Theatre's website for video, photos and reviews of their past productions.
